The most common reason people call us
Back pain is the single most common reason a new patient picks up the phone. It shows up two ways: the sudden kind, where something ordinary like unloading the car went wrong, and the slow kind, where it built quietly for months until one day it would not settle down.
Both are worth understanding rather than waiting out. The slow kind in particular tends to be a pattern, and patterns respond to being interrupted.
Lower back and mid back are not the same problem
Lower back
The lumbar spine carries load and produces most of your bending and lifting. Pain here often involves the joints, the discs between the vertebrae, and the muscle that guards them once something is irritated. It is the region most likely to refer pain into the buttock or leg.
Mid back
The thoracic spine is built for stability and rotation, and it is attached to your ribs. Pain here frequently traces back to posture and breathing mechanics — long hours at a desk, a phone held low, a shoulder that has stopped moving well. It can feel sharp between the shoulder blades or like a band around the ribs.
Think garden, not machine
A machine has one broken part you swap out. A body is closer to a garden: the thing you can see is usually downstream of conditions you cannot. A back that hurts every February after three months of driving and yard work is not a broken part. It is a set of conditions that added up.
The examination is about finding which conditions actually apply to you, then explaining them in plain language before any care begins.
What loads a back in Bradenton
- The commute. A daily run on Cortez Road or Manatee Avenue in season means long stretches seated, braking constantly, with the wallet still in the back pocket.
- The work here. Construction, landscaping, agriculture and hospitality are lifting and standing trades. Boat work adds a moving deck to everything.
- Storm season. Debris hauling produces a distinct wave of low back complaints every year, almost always from repeated bent-and-twisted lifting.
- Retirement done properly. Pickleball at G.T. Bray Park, a long walk on the Riverwalk, a full day out on the water, and grandchildren who expect to be lifted.
What care looks like
After the evaluation, care for many people includes chiropractic adjustments to restore motion where joints have stopped moving well, hands-on work for the surrounding muscle, and specific exercise to hold the change. If posture or a workstation is the driver, we address that too, because otherwise the same conditions rebuild the same problem.
When back pain needs a medical evaluation instead
Common questions
How soon should I do something about back pain?
Sooner is usually simpler than later. Pain that has been present for years is not an emergency, but it has also had time to build compensations. Pain that follows a fall or a collision should be evaluated within days, not months.
Is cracking my own back a problem?
Reaching for that relief usually means a segment nearby is not moving well and the body is trying to find motion somewhere. It is a signal worth having examined rather than a habit worth worrying about.
Do you treat mid back pain between the shoulder blades?
Yes. That region is frequently tied to posture, desk setup and rib mechanics, and it responds well to having the actual driver identified rather than only the sore spot treated.
Will I need care forever?
No. Some people choose periodic maintenance visits the way they would keep up any other part of their health, but that is a choice offered at the end of care, not a condition of starting it.
If the pain travels down a leg rather than staying in the back, read sciatica care. If an examination points to a disc as the driver, herniated and bulging disc care covers it. If the pattern is desk-and-posture rather than one injury, posture correction is the related lane. Every one of them starts from the same evaluation at our Bradenton chiropractic clinic on 6th Avenue East.
