Why hands-on care alone often is not enough
Restoring motion to a joint is one job. Keeping it there is a different one. If the muscles around that joint are not doing their share — because of an old injury, months of guarding, or simply the positions you live in — the problem tends to come back, and people conclude that the care did not work.
Corrective exercise is the part that holds. It is also the least glamorous part, and it is the part that depends on you rather than on us.
What we are actually looking for
- Which muscles have gone short and tight, and which have gone quiet. Those are different problems with opposite answers.
- Whether the hip and mid-back are sharing the work, or whether the low back is doing all of it.
- How you move through the specific things you do every day — lifting, reaching, standing, getting in and out of a truck or a boat.
- What you are able and willing to actually do at home. A perfect program nobody follows is worth nothing.
What this looks like in Manatee County
- Getting back to work — construction, roofing and repair after storm season, growing and packing work east of town, and standing shifts in hotels and restaurants that fill up from January to March.
- Getting back on the water — the balance and grip work that boat decks, ramps and trailering ask for is very specific, and general exercise does not prepare you for it.
- Getting back on the court — pickleball and tennis at G.T. Bray and around the county run year-round, so there is no off-season to heal in by accident.
- Staying steady — for older patients, balance and lower-body strength are the difference between an independent decade and a fall on an uneven sidewalk.
How we teach it
Few movements, taught properly, and checked at the next visit. You should be able to explain what each one is for. If you cannot, we did not teach it well enough.
Common questions
How is this different from working out at the gym?
A workout loads what already works. Corrective exercise targets what specifically is not working in your case, in the right order, at a load your tissue can currently handle. The two can coexist; they are not the same job.
How much time will it take each day?
Usually less than people expect. A short, specific routine done consistently beats a long one done occasionally, and we build the program around what your week actually allows.
Do I need equipment?
Most of what we start with needs nothing but floor space and a wall. If something later calls for a band or a light weight, we will tell you exactly what and why.
What if the exercises hurt?
Then stop and tell us. Some mild muscular fatigue is expected. Sharp pain, or pain that travels into a limb, is information we need and a reason to change what you are doing.
Corrective exercise is usually part of a larger plan. back pain care and posture correction are the two places it matters most, and if the injury happened on the job, work injury care explains how we document the recovery. All of it begins with an evaluation at our Bradenton chiropractic clinic on 6th Avenue East.
