Where the headache actually begins
A headache that starts at the base of the skull and wraps forward toward the eye or temple often is not a problem with the head at all. The upper neck refers pain into the head remarkably well, and when those joints stop moving properly the result can feel exactly like a headache that ought to respond to a tablet and does not.
The clinical name for that pattern is cervicogenic headache — headache arising from the neck. It is not the only kind, and telling the kinds apart is the entire point of an evaluation.
The patterns we look for
- One-sided, starting at the base of the skull, worse after a long stretch at a desk.
- Arriving in the afternoon and easing overnight, which usually points at sustained load rather than a single event.
- Triggered by neck position — a long drive, a night on an unfamiliar pillow, looking down at a phone.
- Following a collision, sometimes days later, alongside neck stiffness.
What sets them off around here
Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch have a great many people working from a laptop on a kitchen counter, which is a posture nobody designed for eight hours. Add the stop-and-go on Manatee Avenue and the bridge queues, season guests sleeping on unfamiliar pillows, long days on the water in chop and glare, and dehydration in Florida heat — and the pattern in our exam room is fairly consistent.
What care involves
We examine how each segment of the neck moves, check the nerves, and look at the shoulders and mid back, because they load the neck all day. For many people care includes chiropractic adjustments to restore motion where it has been lost, hands-on work through the upper back and shoulders, and a small number of specific exercises. Where a workstation or a phone habit is driving it, we address that too, because the neck cannot out-train eight hours a day of load.
Headaches that need a medical evaluation, promptly
Common questions
Can a chiropractor help with migraines?
Some people who have been told they have migraines turn out to have a significant neck component driving or worsening the pattern, and that part often responds to care. True migraine is a distinct condition, and we are careful not to promise results for something the neck is not causing.
How do I know if my headache is coming from my neck?
Common clues are pain that starts at the base of the skull, one-sidedness, a link to neck position or desk time, and neck stiffness alongside it. An examination is what actually separates the causes.
I get headaches after a long drive. Is that normal?
It is common, and it is usually about sustained position rather than the driving itself. Long stretches with the head forward and the shoulders up load the same structures that refer pain into the head.
When should I go to an emergency room for a headache?
A sudden severe headache unlike any you have had, or headache with fever and stiff neck, confusion, vision loss, weakness, difficulty speaking, or a recent head injury. Those need immediate medical evaluation.
Headaches and necks travel together, so neck pain care is the closest companion page. If a desk and a screen are the real driver, posture correction addresses the cause rather than the symptom. If the headaches began after a collision, read whiplash care. All three start at our Bradenton chiropractic clinic on 6th Avenue East.
