The neck holds up a bowling ball
An adult head weighs roughly ten to twelve pounds, and the neck holds it up all day. When the head drifts forward — over a laptop, over a phone, over a steering wheel — the muscles at the back of the neck have to work harder to keep it from falling. Hold that for eight hours and the ache that arrives around four in the afternoon is not mysterious.
Stiffness is information
When a joint in the neck stops moving the way it should, the muscles around it tighten to protect it. That protection is useful for a day and unhelpful for a month. What people describe as “my neck is just tight” is often a motion problem wearing a muscle problem’s clothing.
An examination separates the two: how each segment moves, where motion has been lost, whether the nerves are involved, and whether the shoulder and mid back are contributing.
What we see around here
- Desk work and screens. Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch have a great many people working from a laptop at a kitchen counter, which is a posture nobody designed for eight hours.
- Bridge traffic. Sitting through backups at the Green Bridge and the DeSoto Bridge means long stretches with the head forward and the shoulders up.
- Sleeping arrangements. Season means guests, and guests mean somebody is on the sofa or a guest-room pillow that does not suit them.
- The water and the courts. A day of boating in chop, or a pickleball serve, asks the neck and upper back to absorb more than people expect.
Neck pain and headaches often travel together
Many headaches that people assume are unrelated turn out to start in the upper neck. If you get headaches that begin at the base of the skull and wrap forward, that connection is worth examining rather than medicating around.
What care involves
For many people, care includes chiropractic adjustments to restore motion in the segments that have stopped moving, hands-on work through the upper back and shoulders, and a small number of specific exercises. If a workstation or a phone habit is driving it, changing that is part of the plan, because the neck cannot out-train eight hours a day of load.
When a neck needs more than chiropractic
Common questions
Why does my neck hurt more at the end of the day?
Because load accumulates. The muscles at the back of the neck spend the day holding the head against gravity, and a forward head position multiplies that work. Pain that arrives in the afternoon and eases overnight usually points at posture and sustained load rather than a single injury.
Can neck problems cause headaches?
Frequently. Headaches that start at the base of the skull and wrap toward the forehead often involve the upper cervical segments. It is one of the more satisfying things to evaluate because the connection is so often missed.
Is it safe to have my neck adjusted?
Chiropractic adjustment of the neck is a well-established form of care, and like anything in health care it is appropriate for some people and not others. Screening for the situations where it is not appropriate is a standard part of the first visit, and there are gentler techniques available when they are the better choice.
I woke up and cannot turn my head. What should I do?
That is common, usually settles, and is worth having looked at rather than waiting out, particularly if it keeps happening. If it followed a fall or a collision, or if you have arm weakness or numbness with it, be evaluated promptly.
If headaches come with the neck pain, headache and migraine care is the related page. If this started after a collision, read whiplash care instead, because the timeline and the paperwork both matter. If the driver is a desk and a screen, posture correction addresses the cause rather than the symptom. All three start at our Bradenton chiropractic clinic on 6th Avenue East.
